Itchiness is a very common problem that pet owners see in their dogs. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways that you can address dog itching through home remedies that don’t involve using harsh chemicals and products on their skin.
The following are 7 natural home remedies to try when you see your dog scratching.
It is essential to pay attention if your dog is itching or scratching constantly.
If the dog is scratching until it bleeds, or you keep finding scabs and wounds from their nails on their skin, you should take your dog to the vet to determine the cause behind the itchiness.
1. Oatmeal Bath
Oatmeal baths aren’t just for people! You can soothe your itchy dog by putting together a warm bath, sprinkling in some natural ground oats, and letting your dog soak in the water for about 10 minutes. If you don’t think they’ll stick to the tub, make an oatmeal paste and spread it on the areas with notable dog itching marks.
2. Baking Soda Paste
Baking soda can be used for many different things, including treating your itchy dog. First, create a paste with water (use a 50:50 ratio) and use it on your dog’s affected areas for 20 minutes, then wash it off with plenty of water. If your dog tends to get dry skin, add some coconut oil into the paste.
3. Diet changes
You can make some diet changes to promote skin relief and healing, including adding fish-based foods, which contain omega-3 fatty acids that can help promote better skin health.
However, make sure to talk with your veterinarian before making changes to your dog’s food.
4. Pure coconut oil
For this remedy, all you need is some natural coconut oil; the best form to use for dog scratching symptoms is chilled, solid coconut oil. Then, simply massage the oil into the areas where your dog has been itching to help soothe its symptoms.
5. Herbal Bath
A herbal bath made with natural chamomile, green tea, and calendula can do wonders to help soothe your dog’s itchy skin. Simply start a warm bath, and let the tea bags steep for about 3-4 minutes. Then have your dog in the water for at least 5 minutes total, but ideally longer.
6. Apple cider vinegar spray
This should ONLY be used on dry, itchy skin; do not use it on any skin that is raw or opened in any way, as it will burn from the vinegar in the spray. For this method, create a 50:50 ratio mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. Then, spray the dry areas of your dog’s skin where there has been notable dog scratching for easy, quick relief.
7. Yogurt
Yes – yogurt! Plain yogurt is a healthy treat for dogs and can promote healthy skin, which will help to reduce symptoms caused by dog scratching. Make sure to only opt for plain yogurt with no sugar or any other additives. Ideally, opt for yogurts specifically marketed towards dog consumption. Give your dog 1 teaspoon (or 2, for larger dogs) per week.
